Started in 2001, the Dot NAME generic domain name extension is the only one planned for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to acquire john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Existing third-level names remained active.
